Cioccolo, Angeles City: Cakes and Coffee Night

Amidst the challenges and pressure of living as an adult, you still get to enjoy life's simple joy with your friends-- and they unbelievably served in small plates and cups. Surprisingly, these sweet servings ease your pain and somehow make you think that there is much to explore in life.

A visit to Cioccolo momentarily help you forget that you live in a busy city life and never-ending struggles. It takes you back to another era as I've mentioned in my previous blog post Romantic Air, Renaissance and Relaxing Dining @ Cioccolo, Angeles City, it is surrounded with the beauty of nature with statues and columns in reminiscence of Ancient Greece and Rome. The place itself is worth the trip. Wait until you taste what's in their menu.

We visited Cioccolo for a nightcap. Ironically, we had our favorite coffee paired with slices of cakes, which we shared. Nice to end the night huh? Caffeine and sugar rush to cap the night off.

Cheesecakes and Smoothies for Dinner at K Cafe, Angeles City

One of the sweetest thing in life is served on a sizzling plate. How cool err-- how hot is that? K Cafe's Sizzling Apple Cheesecake (P175/slice) is perfectly concocted to give that sweet and chewy goodness in every bite. It is topped with cool ice cream and served on a hot sizzling plate. To complete the presentation is the caramel syrup that is poured on top and sizzles as it melts and trickles down. The taste is a little playful as it is a mixture of little bit of something. Imagine the tart taste of the apple, the salty and sour flavor of the cheesecake, the creaminess of the ice cream and the sweetness of the caramel, not to mention the cool and warm sensation playing inside your mouth

Nutella Banoffee Pie + Vanilla Smoothie @ K Cafe

Surprise me--that's what I have in mind every time I ask waiters/waitresses for recommendations. And I do love it when they sound so sure with their suggestions because it heightens my curiosity.

I don't have specific food cravings the last time I visited K Cafe at Nepo Quad, Angeles City. The lady who asked for my order suggested the Nutella banoffee pie. I paired it with a tall vanilla smoothie to quench my afternoon thirst for something cold.

The Nutella banoffee pie (P129 per slice) was amazingly delicious! What do you expect from the Nutella and banana combo but complete awesomeness! I love its creamy texture. And the Nutella is not overpowering. The sweetness was just perfect. Ahh! It was heaven in every bite. I just love it.

Beat the Summer Heat with Jollibee Creamy Shakes

Couple of days ago, I saw a video through Facebook about Jollibee products and how the Americans feel about it. Some of them seems to be disgusted but some love it. Funny how they eat halo-halo and how they reacted when they see beans as part of the ingredients (halo-halo is not offered in Jollibee Philippines, by the way).

Regardless of what other nationalities say, Filipinos are pretty happy with Jollibee. The food chain perfectly capture the hearts of Pinoys.

One of Jollibee's latest product offering is the creamy shakes. It is like the heaven's answer to cool us down from the summer heat.  It comes in two flavors: chocolate and strawberry.

The chocolate flavored creamy shakes instantly wowed me. It felt like I could drink it every single day.  It was surprisingly delicious yet inexpensive for its price of P39.

Cioccolo, Angeles City: Romantic Air, Renaissance and Relaxing Dining

We'd all come to that age that crowd and bars do not appeal anymore. And when that time comes, what we consider as fun would be as simple as having dinner or coffee with your friends or family.

Cioccolo is precisely the place that a person who adores serenity like me would love to go. It is a good place to have a relaxing meal, a nightcap or  conversation over coffee away from many people in Angeles City.  Though it's been in the business for several years already, I only visited the place for a couple of times.

Cioccolo is located in Grand Palazzo Royale, an event venue that defines elegance and style. Surrounded with the beauty of nature with statues and columns in reminiscence of Ancient Greece and Rome (err, except for the Elvis statue),  it s a perfect escape from the city turmoil. It is also a very romantic place that makes you want to get married (well, that's sounded too much).

The Place

It is best to come here at night as you get to enjoy the romantic evening ambiance.

Shake It, Baby!

If it looks good, it must tastes good! One of my fave hobby is pinning in Pinterest. As a visual person, I love checking out photos. That is the same reason why I don't write lengthily--it simply bores me.

Among my favorite pins are food. Of course, what else can it be!

I was checking out some pins on shakes or smoothies. These all look yummy! My goodness! Some of these are even good for weight watchers.

Since we really can't beat the summer heat, might as well enjoy it with some cool refreshing smoothie of your choice.

Meat Plus Cafe @ Northwalk, Clark

Craving for meat? That carnivorous pangs is sometimes so hard to resist. When you are craving and salivating for a bite of tender, juicy and flavorful meat, a quick stop to Meat Plus Cafe could be the heaven-sent answer.

Meat Plus Cafe in Northwalk, Clark is one of newest resto in town. They are quite popular in Subic. Thank goodness, you don't have to drive all the way to Subic just to taste their succulent meat.

You can choose US steak meat from the chiller--they have tenderloin, New York and rib eye-- and they'll cook it the way you want it. They also serve burgers, grilled meat, roasted beef, and barbeque pork ribs in combo meals. They also have pasta choices for pasta lovers. If somebody in your gang dislikes meat, then there is salmon steak, fish fillet, soup and salad. For the sweet tooth, they offer desserts like apple pie, rum cake, and carrot cake.

The Place

Meat Plus Cafe is a self-service or cafeteria-style resto. You have to fall in line, tame your hungry stomach and wait for your turn.

Found in Foursquare, Photo by Beck Villarin D.

The place have that canteen appeal. The area gets tight as crowd come in and it may be difficult to squeeze in between chairs as you go to your table.

You can dine inside the air-conditioned area or if you like, especially if you have a smoker friend, you can dine al fresco.

Food and Price

I have no complains at all. It was a fantastic meal and it satisfied my meat craving.

I had my steak medium rare. It is tender and perfect to the bite. I even love the strip of fat in it--yum! (LOL) It was flavorful and the gravy complements it. I am looking forward to my next Meat Plus Cafe experience. As a matter of fact, I already have a planned meal in my head.

The price is pretty reasonable. Depending on the meat or the meal you are going to order, allot P200 - P500.

Turkish Doner, Angeles City

A doner or doner kebab is popularly known as shawarma here in the Philippines. Doner kebab is a Turkish term while shawarma is the Arabic name. The dish consist of meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie [roh-tis-uh-ree] or rotatings spit.

Hungry-pinay.blogspot.com: Turkish Doner

If you are craving for some shawarma or doner, Turkish Doner maybe able to satisfy your cravings. It is one of the concessionaires at the SM Clark Food Court. And you've heard the reputation of the Food Court, right? People are really giving it a thumbs up. It is a nice place to dine and hang out with because of that cozy hotel-like ambiance. Plus, it offers a great selection of food at cheaper price.

Doner can be chicken, beef or mixed. It can be served wrapped in a pita bread as a sandwich with some tomato and onion relish topped with some sauce sauce.

Hungry-pinay.blogspot.com: Turkish Doner

If you don't want it in sandwich, you can also have them served in rice.

Hungry-pinay.blogspot.com: Turkish Doner

Budget can be from P100-250 per person including the drinks.

My doner experience was okay. I love the meat but I wasn't just fond of the sauce, sorry. Sauce matters to me especially when it comes to meat. You really have to pair it with a good sauce. I may sound bias here but I just love the shawarma sauce used by Passport Food. But of course it always comes down to personal preference. So, with that, I guess you have to try it for yourself.

Avelinus, Angeles City: Cheap, Delicious And Deadly Food To Go

We belong in a generation where people are running after time even if it is not running away from us. We do a lot of things everyday that many of us feel that 24 hours is not just enough. To some of us, we work 8-10 hours a day. Then we spend like 1-2 hours for commuting or transportation, 2-3 hours for our chores and errands, and another 2-3 hours for Me-time, watching TV, social networking, and etc. We are left with approximately 6 hours for sleep. Then, we wake up the following morning feeling tired, sluggish and simply do not want to get up and work.

Just to keep up with the demands of our time, we take the shortest route on things. That said, we choose what's convenient. Perfect example of which is buying our meals instead of cooking. Instead of spending 30 minutes to one hour in preparing, chopping and cooking, it takes several minutes to simply order from fast foods, food stalls or restaurants. Sometimes, our food choices are unhealthy because we rather choose what is more accessible.

One of my recent discovery, which is basically not for those resident within the area of Barangay San Jose in Angeles City is the artery-clogging food from Avelinus. I don't intend to malign the store but seriously, the food is not good for the health-conscious especially to those with high blood pressure.

Hungry-pinay.blogspot.com: Avelinus, Angeles City

Hungry-pinay.blogspot.com: Avelinus, Angeles City

Avelinus offers inexpensive, mouthwatering grubs that will bring your cholesterol level to a higher notch. And like buying in carenderia, food stall or fast food, they can have your order at the counter in matter of minutes. Unless, of course, you came during their peak hours which is during lunch and dinner where you could catch a long queue.

Hungry-pinay.blogspot.com: Avelinus, Angeles City

Hungry-pinay.blogspot.com: Avelinus, Angeles City

Hungry-pinay.blogspot.com: Avelinus, Angeles City

You can buy food like lechon kawali, pork sisig, tokwa't baboy (tofu and pork), and baked macaroni for just Php50. Don't expect the pork sisig to be of the same quality with Aling Lucing's and the baked mac with Toll House. The food are good enough for Php50. It's cheap. But most of all, it cuts the time you are supposed to spend in the kitchen.

They hand your ordered food in styrofoam with a sauce.

As I've heard, Avelinus is a family business. Their staff seems to be family members. And it looks like their business originate from Magalang as a seller of home-made empanadas.

Bretto's Fine Meat & Deli Shop, Angeles City

If your thinking of having a lavish dinner or special meal for a special occasion, serving expensive meat or sausages, cheeses and pair it with wine; where else would you go but to a deli shop. For sure, you won't be disappointed with the numerous choices you have rather than going to a regular grocery store. Prices could be little higher compared to the grocery nevertheless, you can find more variety in a deli shop.

In Angeles City, Bretto's Fine Meat & Deli Shop in Don Juico Avenue, Clarkview is a highly suggested place to grab some wine, meat, imported sausages, coldcuts, cheeses and some baked goodies.

Bretto’s Fine Meat and Deli Shop has been in the business since 1994. In 1999, they opened another shop in Subic. It's been years that they are satisfying the deli cravings of their customers.

Wine connoisseur would probably enjoy the variety of wines here.

Bretto's is not just a deli shop though. It has a coffee shop that is said to offer extra large hamburgers and enormous submarine sandwiches. According to their website, they have been voted as the #1 Best Burger in Angeles City. But I have to judge that myself. I would love to try their burgers and sandwiches.

To cater more customers, they expanded their business by opening another branch called Bretto's Prestige at the lobby of Tune Hotel in Angeles City. Bretto’s Prestige has been serving international dishes since September 2013, which seems to me as another must-go resto in the city.

Yufuin, Angeles City

Yufuin is a town in Japan famous for natural hot spring spas. In Angeles City, this is the name of a Japanese restaurant located near SM Clark frequented by many Japanese patrons--one indicator that the resto is good and that it is serving authentic Japanese cuisine.

Yufuin was formerly Yakiniku Tombo, touted to be the first authentic Japanese restaurant in Angeles City. It is owned by Otsuru Group of Companies that also managed Don Don Tei at the SM City Clark’s Foodcourt.

The restaurant made a very good impression to me. It's one place that I would definitely visit again and again for an authentic Japanese meal.

THE PLACE

Upon entering the restaurant, you will be greeted by its Izakaya or Bar where people drink and get to smoke too. This is the smoking section of the resto.

You can choose to dine in the non-smoking section where you get to eat the Japanese way with its low tables and chairs. This is also where you see a lot manga comics, Japanese magazine and books.

If you crave for some grilled meat you  may choose to dine on their second floor which is for Yakiniku dining.

FOOD AND PRICE

Japanese meal seems incomplete without a hot green tea. They serve complimentary tea before serving our order.

Hungry-pinay.blogspot.com: Yufuin, Angeles City

Hungry-pinay.blogspot.com: Yufuin, Angeles City

I enjoyed my bowl of chasyu ramen (Php210). It has pork slices in shoyu ramen soup. Shoyu ramen typically has a clear brown broth, based on a chicken and vegetable (or sometimes fish or beef) stock with plenty of soy sauce added resulting in a soup that is tangy, salty, and savory yet still fairly light on the palate (Wikipedia). The soup and the pork slices are so tasty--I simply loved it. This is just so perfect for the cold weather.

Hungry-pinay.blogspot.com: Yufuin, Angeles City

Ramen can be differentiated with the type of broth they are cooked with. So, for my guidance and for yours as well, here is some basic info that could help you choose which ramen you want to order:

Shoyu ramen as discussed above has a clear brown broth, based on a chicken and vegetable, fish or beef stock with plenty of soy sauce.

Shio ("salt") ramen pale, clear, yellowish broth made with plenty of salt and any combination of chicken, vegetables, fish, and seaweed.

Tonkotsu ramen usually has a cloudy white colored broth. as a thick broth made from boiling pork bones, fat, and collagen over high heat for many hours.

Miso ramen combines copious amounts of miso and is blended with oily chicken or fish broth – and sometimes with tonkotsu or lard – to create a thick, nutty, slightly sweet and very hearty soup.

(source: Wikipedia)

I also had a kakiage tempura (Php180), which is a deep-fried mixed veggies with shrimp.

New York Supreme, Angeles City: Feels Like Love

It was a cool and lovely evening. Despite of not feeling good, maybe because of the unusual cold weather, which most Filipinos are not really accustomed to, I mustered some courage to go out and meet my brother and his wife. That cold feeling instantly fade away as soon as we settled in the New York Supreme at Nepo Quad for our pizza and pasta dinner. It was warm inside the establishment maybe because of the striking red paint inside the room or maybe because of the human heat from the crowd. Nevertheless, it was a lovely evening. It makes me feel there is love on the air--with the red interiors, crowd, family, and food. It makes me feel better (yeah, I know, I wasn't supposed to be out because I could be infectious).

New York Supreme is among those restos in Angeles City that you would often see full-packed. I never had the chance to dine in that place not until that whimsical evening.

We just ordered a creamy pesto pasta, NYS Special and a pitcher of iced tea. Not a lavish dinner really but we went home 5 pounds heavier.

The food and price

I heard their pizza roll is comparable to C'Italian. That has to wait though, I need to try that myself. C'Italian has been a benchmark for many Angelenos foodies who love Italian cuisine. It is quite interesting to note that some people would compare their pizza roll with C'Italian's panniza.

My first New York Supreme experience was good. It deserves another carbo-loading visits.

The NYS Special pizza (14" for Php545, 18" for Php765) has pepperoni, Italian sausage, bacon, mushrooms, green peppers, and black olives. And they boasts the three cheeses on it with their zesty red sauce. It was delish. Two slices of their 14" pizza was enough to make my tummy screaming full.

Their serving of the Creamy Seafood Pesto Pasta with knotted bread (Php245) was hefty--good enough for the three of us. The pasta is cooked with pesto and bechamel sauce that makes it creamy. The creaminess tends to overpower the pesto but it still is delicious though.

The place

New York Supreme has two branches--one in Balibago and the other is in Nepo Quad. You will never miss the resto because it is the only dining place I know with very red interior. I don't have complaints except for the quite tight space for walking especially when the room gets crowded. It's like everyone were just an arm-length or something.

Overall, it was a good dining experience. I would personally recommend the place for those who craves for pasta and pizza without breaking their budget.

Work Mode At K Cafe, Nepo Quad

I am a location-independent worker. I can basically work anywhere as long as there is an internet connection. Though, most of the time, I spend working at home, I sometimes seek for a different environment. My only concern on changing location every now and then is the unreliable internet connection, the distraction and the noise.

So, last time, after paying the bills I decided to stay and work inside K Cafe at Nepo Quad. I simply love staying there. I love the food and the place--no doubt. But just what I needed for that moment, they have a good internet connection. Well, it was early in the afternoon, there are less people inside the cafe so, I didn't have competition with the wifi.

Hungry-pinay.blogspot.com: K Cafe, Nepo Quad

To accompany me during my work, I have myself a cup of coffee and a huge plate of jambalaya pasta. It was my first time to try jambalaya pasta. It taste a lot different compared to other pasta. Of course, what do you expect, it is jambalaya! That should be different. The pasta is creamy. It has sliced spicy sausage, shrimps, and mussel. It is served with two slices of garlic bread. The serving was hefty. It can fill two hungry stomachs.

It has that extra kick that you won't taste in other pasta. It's spicy and it woke up my senses. It's good. But not good enough to make me crave for it. My taste buds prefers the red sauce, white sauce or oil-based pasta. It's a personal preference. But people who love pasta and who love spicy food should try this one. But for me, hmmm, I should say that it is sufficient that I have tasted it. I prefer a milder version with a less playful taste.

Post Holiday Detox

The next thing most of us wanted to do after the endless partying, soirees and celebrations during the holidays is to get rid of the excess pounds. Unless, of course, you want to buy bigger clothes, which is quite costly. But would you really like to buy bigger clothes?

Many would hit the gym or go back to their exercise routine to get back in shape. Some would go on diet. Others choose to detoxify themselves.

I once came across with an article about sassy water for flat belly through Pinterest. I've tried the recipe for couple of times. I did loved it but for some reason I totally forgot about it. Not until the holidays came when I ingested too much food, I realize that I need something too flush it out.

One recipe of sassy water I found has the following ingredients:

2 liters water
1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
1 medium sliced lemon
12 small spearmint leaves

Just mix them together in a large pitcher and let it chill overnight or for more than 8 hours.

I found 25 more sassy water recipes that we can try. The recipes are mixtures of fresh fruits and herbs.  These do not only offer refreshing drinks to keep us hydrated but it helps detoxify and aid weight loss.
